Ciba Geigy Superfund Site once again is being considered for Open Space
When will we learn? Do we want taxpayers to purchase the most polluted site in Ocean County?
Do we really want our children on a remediated Superfund site? Notice the word cleanup is not used, since not all pollution sources are being addressed or removed. Cover up (capping) of some of the polluted areas could be used since that is one of the
preferred remediation remedies.
Notice the map below of pollution source areas on the Ciba Site. Please take note of the top yellow area called "Borrow/Compactor Area".
Now look at the same area on the second map below. The gray areas are those areas designated as "Unrestricted Use Area" by the Federal (EPA) Environmental Protection Agency.

The following chemicals have been detected in the Borrow/Compactor Area and are grouped as "Chemicals of Concern", 1,2,3-Trichloropropane, 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene, 1,2-Dichlorobenzene, 2-Chlorotoluene, Chlorobenzene
Naphthalene, Nitrobenzene, Tetrachloroethene, and Trichloroethene. Do we really want any child playing in this area? Suppose a baseball field is built in this area, then a club house or put up a fence. Every time this soil is disturbed are we going to release or be potentially exposed to some hazard, is it worth it? Protect the children for they are the future.
Open space is a great idea, but not for a Superfund Site.
Once Again We Welcome Wagner College Studying Environmental Factors
Wagner College located in Staten Island, New York freshman class is studying environmental factors that affect a community such as Toms River, New Jersey.
The class attended presentations and held interviews with community members and companies at Ocean County College.
EPA Meeting Held on the Consent Decree for the Ciba Geigy Superfund Site
The public has until October 20th to submit written comments on the Consent Decree. A copy of the consent decree is available for viewing on this web site, see the link below. Many concerns were raised at this meeting about air monitoring during the
remediation of the site. There is a public school close to the site and citizens were concerned about the air quality impacting the young children attending that school. One must take a lesson from history, our goverment agencies failure to monitor the
air quality leaving the site of the Reich Farm Superfund Site in 1995. Proper air monitoring must be a priority.
